Um Chagga Lagga – Fun New Music from The Pixies

As the description that accompanies the video below explains, “The Pixies stopped by the Rolling Stone office to play two songs, including a brand-new, yet-to-be-recorded number titled ‘Um Chagga Lagga.'”

And boy is it fun. Enjoy!

They also performed “Planet of Sound” while at Rolling Stone, and apparently, they have about a dozen songs they’re getting ready to record for a new record. So we have that to look forward to… which is nice.

You can read the Rolling Stone interview with The Pixies, here: “See Pixies Play ‘Planet of Sound,’ New Song ‘Um Chagga Lagga'”

Ten Songs – Celebrating The Pony Express

A Fortuitous #FlashbackFriday – A Restless Ear’s Favorite Music of 2012

Having just recently dusted off this blog site, I discovered this hidden draft of a post that I never completed or published in early 2013.  So why not just send it on its way through the Interweb for a musical stroll down memory lane – call it a fortuitous #FlashbackFriday:

A Restless Ear’s Favorite Music of 2012
Conventional wisdom dictates that one publish their “end of year” list at, well, the end of the year. Most pundits publish their best of the year lists anytime between Thanksgiving and, well, the end of the year. But I like to challenge convention. So here now, a week into February of 2013, I am publishing my long promised favorite songs and albums of 2012.

In fairness, I really was counting on the Mayan’s and really never expected I would actually have to publish this year’s list! But I’m glad I am, because it was a terrific year of music and herewith are my favorites. Keep in mind, I am not a professional music critic, just a plain old listener like you, with a restless ear.

Inspired by a crowd sourcing request from The Hired Guns on Twitter today, I compiled a baker’s dozen of some favorite cover songs. This was no easy task. It turns out, there are a lot of really good cover songs. So, by no means is this list definitive. But I’ve playlist tested it on my iPod and it seems to hold together well. So take it for a spin and let me know what you think. What cover songs do you suggest?

Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again – Cat Power (Bob Dylan)
Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen)
Redemption Song – Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros (Bob Marley & the Wailers)
